about

The Scarsdale Hundred is a tree-covered hillside upon which rests the ancient Wingfield Manor. A decaying shell of a stately home from the old days. Unfortunately it's surrounded by land belonging to a cruel and greedy farmer who won't let would-be visitors explore a beautiful piece of history. Way she goes.

The 10 compositions that comprise Suncastle's Scarsdale Hundred show how clearly the man has evolved his electic electro style into one that distills the contradictory logics of the digital age. Melodic and experimental concepts with a true mischievous irony—a sensibility cultivated perhaps by musical tension. With it's expressive form of melodic downtempo sensibility, the title track,

Scarsdale opens up with a beat-driven vibe coupled with a deep synth bass growl, as alluring, chiming arps and dreamlike melodic swirls of sound welcome you. Smart percussive touches punctuate the overall glittering ambience with delightful implications. 1441's ascending blocks of synth chords and breathy pads lead us into a sepia-toned production with an air of pure electronic nostalgia. Kessarin takes us into an intricate, lo-fi soundfield that transmutes as it winds through its layers of sound and articulation. As the shortest track at just over two minutes, its progression is gone before we can even get remotely lost in it. Entering with low and wandering bass line, Parallax Jones offers up a succinct groove that is as playful as it is laid back. Overlapping textures and misty, warbled keyboards lead us on through this psych-fueled odyssey. SIDEONEDANCE comes in with a solid electro beat, danceable shades and colorful sonic facets...perfectly situated percussion add a lovely groundwork for the cascade of mesmerizing arps.

The ever-changing and unstoppable SIDETWODANCE with it's wavering synth line and fantastic auxiliary soundwork is a 4-on-the-floor EDM carnival. Next, Brine Palace Blues pulsates as a throwback ode to reworked funk, backed with a creamy, resplendent production and brilliantly constructed skittering beats. Wake and Quake opens with a plodding kick as gentle plucks of 5ths bounce off each other in abstract clockwork fashion. This builds as the beat propels forward with murky, drifting clusters of dirty guitars. The staggered electro-acid of Planet Beach, kicks off with a modulated synth hook coupled with a machine-heart pulse, as an arsenal of twinkling effects and vaporous synths travel over pitch-shifted frequencies, giving way to what is truly a totally different feel in the second half of the song, as a delightfully sour and smudgy organ carries on, settling around the head like watching a sordid b-movie in rapid blinks. Finishing things off with the low-fi beat of Hundred, we are treated to a rich and joyful musical excursion that leaves you smiling to yourself. As with all Suncastle albums, Scarsdale Hundred offers the listener a wonderfully wide expanse of ideas, while continuing to entice and dazzle us every step of the way.
